The perfect eye look is not just about adding color to your lids and following up with your favorite volumizing mascara. Sometimes your eyeshadow looks beautiful, and other times it looks plain awful. Let’s avoid the latter. From natural, everyday to going out, festive eye makeup, here are a few application skills to incorporate into your routine from our professional makeup artist – Miss EM. Prime your lids like you mean it. Priming is already half the battle and for the expert makeup artist, it’s one absolute rule to follow. Find the right primer for you here. It solves common dilemmas like creased eyeshadow, smears, fading and oily lids. If you don't have an eyeshadow primer, apply concealer to your lids before anything else. While you can have as many eyeshadow brushes as you can fit into your makeup bag, two or three great blending brushes is all you need. When beginning your look, blend using a denser brush and then follow up with a thinner, smaller contour brush for contouring. A tapered blending brush does wonders and if you're more into highlighting your browbone, you can go for a more light, feathery brush. Check out our super soft bamboo brushes. Lining your lower waterline with a light, flesh-toned eyeshadow will make your eyes look even bigger and more gorgeous. Add a bit extra to the inner corner of each eye for a POP. When it comes to eyeshadow application, always begin with the lightest gradually applying a darker shade. For a deeper eye look, first apply the lightest shades-of-choice to the entire lid. Then take a darker shadow and apply onto the crease above the lids. This will create an element of dimension. Blend, blend, blend for a seamless finish. For tiny mistakes and smudges, you can use a translucent powder and a fluffy brush to take soften any smudges. If you fancy creating a winged eye look, choose a wing that flatters your unique eye shape. For example, if you have round eyes, and want to give more of an illusion of length, you may want to start by lining from 1/3 of your eyes and then bring back your line into a longer, horizontal flick. And for more almond shaped eyes, you can uplift the outer corner of the bottom rim on your lower lash line by ending your wing early with an exaggerated ‘lift’ at the end. And lastly, when it comes to choosing eyeshadow colors, choose the ones that will compliment your skin tone well. Deeper complexions tend to pair better with warmer eyeshadow and vice versa.
