Was there a distinct moment when you knew exactly what you wanted to do with your life/career?
Not at all. It’s still constantly changing honestly! I have far too many passions and interests - it’s a blessing and a curse.
Usually I’m one who finds solace in finite plans, but this year has really shown me (and us all, really) that that just doesn’t exist, does it? It’s forcing me to be more comfortable with uncertainty. Right now, I am just so grateful to have a stable job and my health.
What would you say ultimately drives your passion for your work?
I’ve always had a love for photography and, being a very image-driven industry, I think it makes sense I am drawn to this way of story-telling.
I *try* to walk and/or run first thing in the morning. I find it a nice way to clear my head - free from my phone, tv, etc.
While doing my morning skincare routine, I make a cup of hot lemon water and throw on my morning playlist. After that comes the coffee - which I drink far too much than I should admit.
Book or podcast you recommend in the name of motivation or self-growth…
Everyone should read The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business. It was such a life-changing book for me and really helped me identify what areas in my life I wasn’t happy with.
Another favorite is You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. If you are doubting yourself or at a crossroads, this is the book for you!
What is your definition of being in complete alignment with your 'Soul Purpose’?
I immediately think of a state of being. As in, not only reaching a place where you identify the area you are most passionate about, but then also acting on it. I think that’s when your soul feels most fulfilled.
How do you take a step back every now & then to give yourself a breather?
I’m a big TV show junkie - so if I need a break from all the chaos, I’ll typically dive into a good show.
We're going through an unusually trying time right now, how do you see positive change coming about through all of this?
The people. It’s truly incredible to witness such communal, global activism. I get emotional thinking about it.
Do you ever feel major creative block, and how do you cope with this?
All the time - it’s so hard not to get down on yourself when you have constant access to others’ beautiful creations. I’ve learned to just take a step back and let myself just go through it. It’s important to remind ourselves that EVERY artist goes through their ebbs and flows - so why push it?
Do you see opportunity for female creatives to grow during this uncertain time?
1000%. Women SHOW UP for one another - and I think we’ve really seen that this year. As a brand manager, I am constantly working on partnerships for my clients and I can almost always count on women-owned brands when it comes to collaborations. Just in the community of DC, I’ve seen all these small, women-owned brands come together to host virtual shopping events, giveaways, etc. There’s always room for growth when you have support.
What are some of the personal setbacks or other challenges you've faced in recent months, and how do you face them?
These months have definitely come with their fair share of challenges. I’ve recently ended a relationship and moved across the country amidst this pandemic - so I've found myself quite out of my comfort zone. It's all about your support system though - and I’m really lucky to have my family. It sounds so cliche - but there's really nothing more important!
And lastly, what single piece of advice would you give to another passionate creative who may feel hesitant with pursuing their passion in this period?
Don’t waste time! It's far too precious. I waited far too long to pursue this career because of a million little roadblocks I put in my own way. If you want something, all you can do is try and go for it!
