Spring has brought with it an insatiable need to refresh. I’ve kicked it into high gear — rearranging, discarding, and filling in where needed. I finally decided that our “this will do for now” lamp had run its course. I wanted to come up with something tasteful and inexpensive to replace it with, so I looked amongst the materials I already had and found this great vintage bottle. A little google search revealed that Lowes sells DIY bottle lamp kits, and there I was, I was in business. A run to the store and 20 minutes later, I had a brand new lamp and a sigh of relief — my home was one step closer to the refresh I needed. If you’re in need of a new lamp, this DIY is a great idea for you too. I’m sure you have an old bottle on hand that could be made useful. So here you go, here’s how! You’ll Need: Bottle Lamp Kit from Lowes or Home Depot Vintage Bottle Light Bulb Lampshade of Choice Screw Driver Directions: Open up your lamp kit, and lay the pieces out in this order. First, you’re going to loosen the screw on the funnel-shaped piece, so that you can twist in the long rod. Feed the rod through the cap-shaped metal piece, and twist on the nut to secure it. Then feed the electric cord through the hole provided. The kit comes with several different sized rubber pieces. Pick the one most appropriate for your bottle, and twist it onto the rod. If your bottle has a large opening, it might work best not to twist it on all the way. This will make your piece more bottom heavy, giving the fixture more leverage to stand up. Now, split apart your cord and take the top piece of the fixture. Use your screwdriver to loosen the screws on either side, then place the wire and twist the screws tightly closed to hold the wire in place. Take the upper section’s metal cap and put it over top to hold everything in place. Put your fixture into the mouth of your bottle, screw in a light bulb, top it off with a lampshade, plug it in, and let the light shine. This post is from our guest blogger Naomi.
