Awesome Things to Do In Austin This Summer

Austin, Texas is definitely a fun place to be in summer. Yes, we all tend to look forward to planned vacations during these months, but never fear! There are so many opportunities ready to be enjoyed in the great outdoors of Austin (and nearby cities), day and night. You know that it is already summer here when the countdown to Texas Football begins. Another obvious hint of summer being in the air - ninety degrees is a "cool" day and instead of cocktails, people are licking popsicles. And, even though the bat bridge looks touristy at this time of year, you find yourself wanting to go anyway to see it for yourself (perhaps again).
Although Austin’s summers are definitely hot, there are great getaway places where you can cool off. The much-loved capital city of Texas is the home to many natural springs and pools. There's the Lost Creek Swimming Hole in South Central, the Hamilton Pool, the Krause's Springs in Spiced (30 miles west of Austin), the Barton Springs Pool - just to name a few.
If you are up for a “journey into the past”, visit the dinosaur track in Leander. These tracks are found in a riverbed snuggled in Leander. It is just a short hike and with the clear weather, it is easy to spot the fossilized footprints downstream on the side of the bridge. Best thing of all is it’s free to visit the place.
How about a quirky adventure? If you want something that is strangely amusing, you should check out The Cathedral of Junk in South Austin. The place is built from, well, junk that is shaped into a cathedral. The structure was started in 1988 and had continuously grown over the years with the contributions of people from all over the world. Currently, the cathedral is made up of more than 60 tons of junk.
During summertime, Zilker Park becomes the center of music with the largest live concerts and hey, it is ultimately free. Artists play various music from rock to pop to country. So go grab a blanket, sit down with some coolers and enjoy the event. The Zilker Hillside Theater also showcases plays during summers and they’re free too!
Love artsy things? Escape the heat and head to any of Austin's museums. There is the Harry Ransom Center and Texas Memorial Museum (both inside the University of Texas), The Contemporary Austin, and, the Blanton Art Museum. The Austin Public Library also has some awesome summer reading programs for adults and kids.
Get out and explore the great outdoors. Go fishing at the East Metro Park or feed the ducks at Mueler Park. Never miss out on these opportunities to enjoy the long days of sunshine and cold drinks!
